Obedience and Vision

Obedience and Vision by Laurie McTier

"Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:" Genesis 12:1, 2

As we read about Abraham and Sarah in the Old Testament, we are given a vivid picture of a man and woman of great faith. Abraham and Sarah walked with God, they yearned to please Him, and they wanted to follow His directive hand.

As I read the Abrahamic Covenant that God made with Abraham thousands of years ago, I am reminded of many key factors that are vital to our Christian walk.

1. Immediate Obedience. When God told Abraham to get out of the country, he immediately assembled his family and he obeyed God's voice. Abraham did not know which direction he was headed, he acted in obedience and faith that God would lead the way.

2. Vision. Abraham and Sarah were willing to take risks. They incorporated faith with vision. As they sought God, He directed and anointed their steps, He became their shield and defender. Through their needs, God revealed Himself and expanded their vision and relationship with Him.

3. Inheritance. As Abraham and Sarah served God, God began to give them the desires of their heart. God promised them that their seed would be equal to the number of the stars in the sky. God told Abraham to claim his territory. His riches and his inheritance were equal to all of the land that He saw in the horizon. Abraham had a God given vision and inheritance.

4. Blessing. God made them a promise that they would be blessed and that they would be a blessing. They touched many people in their lifetime and throughout history. Our life can do just the same. God wants us to serve Him and He wants to empower us so that our life can be a blessing to someone each and everyday.

Daily Prayer Focus: Lord, increase my faith today. I pray that I will be sensitive to your directive hand and constantly reminded of the blessings you have given to me.

Life In This Generation

Life In This Generation by Keith Cook

"Since no man knows the future, who can tell him what is to come?" Ecclesiastes 8:7

As we look around our modern culture we see several trends and patterns evolving.

1. Family Life is being tested and targeted. Educational institutions see parents as being a source of income for education, not partners in education. To marketing giants, adults and those who live responsible lives, are seen as being out of step and out of touch with modern life and culture. Media portrays our children and teenagers as possessing all of the knowledge and mental development that they need in order to make all of life's decisions for themselves. Their bodies, lifestyles, future, and well-being depends on their having the right to make decisions independent from their parents.

2. Civil unrest and uneasiness is rampant. Terrorists, gangs, drug dealers, addicts, criminals, protesters, media outlets, snipers, and internet chat-rooms all point to a brooding and explosive civil situation. Sin is running rampant, sin is running lives! Sin is running our society! Sin is also ruining lives! Sin is ruining our society!

3. Political turmoil is everywhere. Countries who were once allies are now at opposite sides of conflicts. Leaders are fighting economic, military, and popularity battles daily. Polls, public opinions, and political correctness all rule the day.

4. People are still open to the supernatural and spiritual. This is great news for those of us who know Christ! We have a great avenue to introduce the proper solutions to societies ills. We can introduce God's principles into family life, civil life, and political life. We can take Jesus out into our culture. It may be hard and it may be risky, but we can get an audience.

With this opportunity comes great responsibility. If we offer solutions and direction we had better be sure we are being guided by the Spirit of God, and not just religious culture. We had better be speaking the truth in love. We had better speak to all the needs of man and not just all the needs of the church.

We must direct our efforts to taking the whole Gospel to the whole man. Jesus came to earth, He lived, died, and rose again. He offers and provides life and peace for all who come to Him and follow Him.

Life in this generation is not any different from the past. The only difference is that this is our generation. We must serve it well.

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray that you will serve your generation well and that your life will make an impact for Jesus Christ.

On The Go Prayer Focus: On The Go's GoCamp ministry that trains believers all over the world how to share their faith.

Set Up By God

Set Up By God by Keith Cook

"This is what Hezekiah did throughout Judah, doing what was good and right and faithful before the LORD his God. In everything that he undertook in the service of God's temple and in obedience to the law and the commands, he sought his God and worked wholeheartedly. And so he prospered." 2 Chronicles 31:20,21

There are three words that represent how God has set up every believer for success and fulfillment. Believers down through the ages have all had the same opportunities for greatness and servanthood. Our Lord wants us to know that we are privileged, held responsible, and have a great capacity to serve.

1. Privileged - Every Christian is privileged to have a life in Christ. It is a glorious thing to be called "Christ Like" and it is even more of a privilege to have the opportunity to get to know Christ better each day through our times of devotion and walking in the light of His revealed will.

2. Responsible - Every child of God has a God given responsibility to do the work of the kingdom and to be ambassadors and servants of Jesus Christ. We must do the work of the evangelist. We must take up the cross of Jesus as our own. The cup of cold water and the gifts of compassion must be shared.

3. Capacity - Once a person comes to Christ their capacity for good and their resources for service are expanded. This happens by the filling of the Holy Spirit. The Word of God says that each day we can be filled to overflowing, our filling will result in boldness, and our boldness will result in decisions for Christ.

Today you and I are privileged, held responsible, and have a great capacity to do God's will. Oh that we could live up to those three words and see lives changed because of our witness and the power of God's Holy Spirit ministering through us!

Daily Prayer Focus: Praise God for the opportunity to be privileged, to be held responsible, and the great capacity to serve.

On The Go Prayer Focus: All the Ministry Partners, Missions, Missionaries that On The Go ministers with. It takes team work to make the dream of reaching the world a reality.

The Joy of the Lord is My Strength

The Joy of the Lord is My Strength by Laurie McTier

"Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore." Psalms 16:11

As a Christian, our source and strength comes from the Lord. As we seek to follow His heart and His will for our lives, God will give us fullness of joy.

Seek the Lord today in all that you do. Commit this week to the Lord. Sometimes, my to do list seems a mile long. In the hustle and bustle of my day, it is easy for me to lose track of what is most important. If you find yourself in a stressful situation this week, keep in mind that the joy of the Lord is your strength.

With His help, we can be victorious in every situation. As we dwell on Christ and all that He has in store for us, the pressures and stresses of our day will become minimal and we will quickly feel more at rest. Our lives are to shine for Christ. His beauty is to radiate through us.

Daily Prayer Focus: God, place a hedge of protection around me today. Help me to remember that the joy of the Lord is my strength.

On The Go Prayer Focus: On The Go's World Outreach Center (WOC). This is our main office and training facility. Pray for God to protect the building, guard the mechanical and structural aspects of the facility, and use the facility for maximum eternal benefits.

Briskets and Blessings

Briskets and Blessings by Keith Cook

"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval." Hebrews 11:1, 2

Just recently we were called to do a mighty festival in India. We were asking God for thousands of souls to be saved in a Hindu stronghold. God desired for us to go, we had invitations to go, and we wanted to go! All we lacked was the resources to go.

As time for our departure neared we still had a tremendous financial need. We prayed, read the Word, and sought spiritual advice from Godly men and women. They all encouraged us to press on and trust God and not shrink back in what God had given us to do. We were needing just at $15,000 dollars to pay for all the supplies, tickets, materials. God had promised Joan and I that we would not owe one cent when the project was over and that He would provide our every need.

One morning when Joan came back from the post office she came in rejoicing with over 10,000 in gifts that we had received to use in India. What a great faith builder that was - we only lacked $5,000. What a walk of faith - we knew everyone who normally gives had given and we still lacked this great amount. Everyday something came in for our project but we were running out of days. Finally we had arrived at departure day with over $2,000 still needed.

In prayer that day the Lord spoke to my heart to follow Him, just like I did as a young minister. To get on the plane trusting Him to provide. He wanted me to take off from this country and see the hand of God at work even when I could not. God wanted me to believe Him and not let my not seeing the provision stop me from walking in my God's provision. Even when I could not see it I could believe Him for it! He wanted me to look at the needs of the people in India more than my need. He wanted me to look to Him more than I looked to my board or mailing list! I had to rest in Christ - I had to be seated in the Heavenly places.

My part was to preach Jesus and not worry about the funds. God's part was to energize my words, and provide for my needs.

Everyday we received emails from my office telling us what had come in during the day to help with finances. The Lord sent in some funds to keep the ministry running in the United States but not the remaining $2,000 we needed. Still we were to trust Him.

Unknown to us a little lady in Texas, who Joan and I had eaten Beef Brisket in her home during a revival and who had taught me how to make/grill Brisket, was moved by God to send us a gift earmarked for India. We had all the money we needed to the penny, but we did not know it - but God did!

We preached, ministered, cared, shared, and taught until the day we were to depart. Still not knowing we had the funds. On our way home we stopped in Paris, France to change planes. While there we checked our emails from the office and received the news of God's provision. God had been true to His Word. We had heard from God and we had seen a great spiritual victory.

Let me encourage you to strike out by faith and trust God to do great and mighty things in and through your life.

Daily Prayer Focus: Ask God to show you areas in your life where you need to step out in faith and trust Him to do great and mighty things. Praise Him for His Blessings and Provisions.

On The Go Prayer Focus: The follow-up of inquirers who come publicly and make decisions for Christ, write in for materials to grow in Christ, or who visit our website looking for help in following Christ. Pray for local believers, churches, parents, and friends who all will be used of God to nurture each and every one to maturity in Christ.

How Christians Are Viewed In Our Culture

How Christians Are Viewed In Our Culture by Keith Cook

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12: 1, 2

I have often been asked, "How are Christians viewed in our culture?" As I thought about this, here are a few ideas that came to mind.

1) Christians are very busy people

We are always running to meetings.

We are very active and social.

We are a very closed group.

2) We are now, for the first time in American history, seen as a strange religion with strange and culturally odd followers

There are so many different kinds of Christians and we all fight against each other.

We talk a different language from most in our culture.

We espouse a different philosophy from most university professors, newspaper editors, and Hollywood actors.

3) Some see us as a very blessed people

We go through life with no problems.

We have lots of friends.

We seem to have our god's favor if there is a god.

4) We are generally seen as good if not misguided people

Most of us are not violent - except the most radical.

We are not seen as being neglectful of social needs - but judgmental of those who do not see things our way.

We are seen as good workers, good neighbors, good students - just plain good.

5) We are a judged people - non-believers judge us harshly

They think Christians live contrary to beliefs and are really hypocrites.

They think deep down inside Christians do not really care about others and that we are judging them and putting them down.

They think Christians do not share their blessings and that we are selective in who we will help. We only will help if they "get saved" or come to church, or do what we want them to do or live as we want them to live.

If we are viewed this way then we better be doing something to make sure we are making friends, listening, and doing all we can to embrace, attract, and engage our culture. Gone is the luxury of being the "moral majority." We now are the Christian minority. We are the most discriminated against, slandered, abused, attacked, and ridiculed group in our culture. We must change our strategy to win and reach our culture.

What can you do today that can make a difference?

1) Begin to pray that God will show you a way to make a difference right now. Trust Him He will begin to give you insight and direction.

2) Take baby steps first. You do not have to start a crusade or movement. Just be obedient to what God is calling you to do. Jesus constantly did the little and unspectacular on His way to doing the colossal.

3) Do not grow weary in doing good. God may make you a champion of one or give you an army of followers. No matter - you follow and work as unto the Lord.

4) Read all you can and learn all you can about the modern mind-set. Do not be intimidated but be educated as to what you are up against. Many young thinkers and leaders hear the awesome task and stop trying - and say we can not do evangelism or outreach any more - because of modern culture. That is a lie straight from the Devil. You can learn all you can - but you still have to do something that does more than inform or inspire - you still have to convert the lost to faith in Christ or they will not see the streets of Heaven.

5) Join with others who see things as you do and who want to make an impact in this generation. Avoid spending time with those who want to go slow or who simply want to go from Jesus rally to praise rally. Run with those who want to win people to Christ. Hang with those who see their mission in life communicating Christ to their culture. Explore the mysteries of God with those who want to go deep into the truths of God's Word. It is so much more fun to go into all the world with others who are enjoying the journey.

May God bless you as you dream big and go deep with Him.

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray that God will show you where He is working in your midst today and how you can make a difference.

On The Go Prayer Focus: Those who need to make decisions for Christ as On The Go and the Keith Cook Team shares the Gospel around the world. Pray that they will hear a clear message about Christ, that the Holy Spirit will move them to a point of decision and that they will be bold enough to publicly respond for Christ.

Earnest Prayer Warriors

Earnest Prayer Warriors by Keith Cook

"Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." James 5:16

People in the United States, France, Philippines, India, Pakistan, Brazil, Indonesia, Iraq, and all over the world need to know that the Lord is with them, and He will continue to be with them if they will stand up for what is right.

Regardless of where you live, if you will stand up and be counted as a child of God, as one who has given your life to Jesus Christ, the Lord has promised you His protection. The Bible says that there may be times when no one else will stand with you. But in those times you can trust the Lord and know that He is standing with you and will enable you to obey Him.

Right now, those of us who are Christians have a wonderful opportunity to pray. Not just passively pray, but to get excited about what is going on in our nation and around the world. You and I can pray that we will begin to grasp some of the truths God has for us in these last days and do something. There have been a number of times throughout history when it seemed like all of God's people had either turned away or otherwise disappeared. But, in the Bible it says that God has always preserved a remnant, a small group of faithful followers, of proactive Christians, who are earnestly praying and working to the last moment of their lives for Jesus.

(This devotion was taken as an excerpt with permission from Keith Cook's newest book entitled "The End is Near".  Throughout this book, Keith addresses current front page issues in light of Biblical interpretation, and boldly shares how you can implement true Christian lifestyle principles in your everyday life. To purchase your own personal copy of his book, please contact On The Go Ministries.)

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray that we will begin to grasp some of the truths God has for us in these last days and that we will do something today that will make an eternal difference.

On The Go Prayer Focus: All the local churches, committees, and leaders who will be working with On The Go Ministries and the Keith Cook Team in creative outreach efforts in the United States and around the world.

Is The End Near?

Is The End Near? By Keith Cook

"This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away." 2 Timothy 3:1-5

This is a question millions of people are asking themselves and others. I believe the Bible has an answer for this question. A number of people have asked Joan and me why God is doing things to our country or why He is choosing to demolish everything. (Example: The attack on the World Trade Center, September 11, 2001, terrorist bombings, highjacking of airplanes, war, sniper shootings, etc...) My late friend and coworker, James Earle Sr., once said: "Why is it that God seems to have His hand on some and His foot on others?"

Our response is that God is not doing this at all. As Americans, we have asked God to kindly remove Himself from all our schools, our courtrooms, our homes, and our city halls; and God has left us to our own devices. Joan and I believe that God may have removed some of His protection as well.

Thus, these circumstances are not something that God has done to us. It is the result of the sin that came into the world when Adam and Eve chose to disobey God.  All of us inherited that sin, which placed us in the position we are in today. Every person, since Adam and Eve, has been born with an innate tendency toward sin.

Recently, I asked my wife what she would want to tell parents and grandparents who have children and youth who are scared and fearful right now. They are afraid something terrible like a terrorist attack, a sniper incident, or another catastrophic event will happen again. How do they live in faith, not fear?

Joan quickly responded, "While something like this is incredibly alarming and could happen again at any moment, we cannot live our lives in constant fear."

Our son is now in his thirty's and it's scary to think of all the places that we go and how something actually could happen to him or to one or both of us.  But you know what? God is there. God is in the center of everything. He is the center of our lives, and we have to know that He is watching over us. He knows what is going on. He is not watching us from afar, but He is watching over us very closely. He knows every hair on our head, each one closely numbered, He knows everything about us.

We have to realize that as we go about our daily lives trying to serve Him and trying to do what is right that He will be there for us. God is always there and taking care of us every second.

Daily Prayer: Confess All Known Sin to God.

Also, Pray for your family, your community, your nation that God will draw all men to Himself and that they will turn away from sin and it's captivity.

Danger Signs

 Danger Signs by Laurie McTier

"For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come." 1 Timothy 4:8

In working with young people around the world, I have noticed many of them appear to be more physically fit and have much more energy than I do. A few years ago, I began to notice that on some of our mission projects I was getting sick, fatigued, and unable to finish some of my tasks. Was God placing danger signs in my path? It alarmed and concerned me.

God began to tug at my heart and I sensed He was saying, "Laurie, do you love me?"

My response was, "Yes, Lord, you know that I do."

Then He said, "Laurie, do you want to serve me?"

Again my heart's cry was, "Yes, Lord, you know that I do."

Then the Lord tenderly, lovingly showed me that He still had a plan and purpose for my life, but He needed my help in the area of discipline. He wanted me to give Him total control of every area of my life; not just my work time, not just my prayer time, but specifically in the areas of my finances, health, and social life. He wanted me to be wholly healthy in order to do all that I was commanded by Christ. God was about to set me free!

God led me on this specific area of my life as the Holy Spirit zeroed in on very real needs. He showed me that in order for me to continue to do God's work and travel across the globe, I needed to get in better shape physically, eat better, exercise more, and begin to work at building up my stamina.

Now, with God's help, I am beginning to see His plan in these areas of my life unfold. He has given me a nutrition plan and an exercise plan as well as the strength and endurance to work these plans out in my own life.

This is the day that the Lord has made, choose to run the race that He has for you, live in the center of His will, and complete the tasks that He has given to you today. To God be the glory, great things He has done!  I challenge you today to finish well. When God gives you a task, complete it wholeheartedly and seek to honor Him.

Daily Prayer Focus:  God, open our eyes to areas of our hearts that need to be brought back under your submission. We are your servants, and we want to honor You with all that You have given us.

A Heart for God

A Heart for God by Joan Cook

"But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. This is the account of Noah. _Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God." Genesis 6:8,9

In my travels, I have the opportunity to see the mighty power and awesomeness of God at work in so many peoples' lives.  Unfortunately, the works of Satan are also alive and well.  Sin and evil are rampant today, as in the days of Noah. In Genesis 6, the Bible says that God was actually sorry that He had made man and was grieved in His heart.  Evil had enveloped the earth and man had chosen the things of the world rather than the things of God.  How sad to think that Almighty God was sorry He had created man!  The Bible goes on to say that God looked around the earth and found one man in whom He was pleased.  That man was Noah.  Noah had found favor in God's eyes.  WOW!  Can you imagine being the one person on the entire earth that had found favor with God.

In today's society, we know sin is rampant.  You've only to look at the headlines of your local newspaper to find that man's heart is not for God, but for self.  We know Satan is at work in this old world and daily he is trying to infest man with the disease called sin.  But, we have reason to rejoice!  God is looking for men and women who have a heart for Him. What made God take notice of Noah and single him out?  Let's look and see:

1. Noah found favor with God (Gen. 6:8)

What exactly is favor?  Webster defines favor as a kind, friendly and gracious attitude. Remember God was sorry He had made man, but when He looked at Noah, He had a kind, friendly and gracious attitude toward him. Wow!

2. Noah was righteous (Gen. 6:9)

Usually when we think of righteousness or being righteous we think "holier than thou". Righteous really means that we meet the standards of what is right and moral. With sin so rampant, Noah was the "odd" man who stood out of the crowd. He did what was right and moral. His environment was sinful, yet he chose to be righteous.

3. Noah was blameless in his time (Gen. 6:9)

One who is blameless is someone who is innocent. Noah lived among heathens, but was innocent in all his ways. He lived in the world, but was not a part of the world.

4. Noah walked with God (Gen. 6:9)

Only two men in the entire Bible are said to have walked with God, Enoch and Noah. One of the definitions of walking means, to conduct oneself or behave in a given manner. I believe Noah behaved in a manner that was worthy. He followed or journeyed with God.

Does your life have the attributes of Noah? Are you finding favor with your Master?  Are you righteous and blameless before God?  Strive to walk with the Lord daily, being an example for others to follow.

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray that God will give you a greater heart for Him. Pray that you will find favor with God, seek to live righteously and blamelessly, and walk with God.

There Is Still Room for More Love

There Is Still Room for More Love by Keith Cook

Happy Valentine's Day!

Take time today to celebrate the love of Jesus and the love of man. We thought this would be the best way to celebrate this Valentine's Day. True love is seen in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8,13

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Charity never faileth:

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Daily Prayer Focus: Praise God for His unending love!

By A Razors Edge

By A Razors Edge by Keith Cook

Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;  2 Petter 1:5-10 (NASB)

The other day I was in a hurry getting ready for church. I was running late and not really paying attention. I was not really focused on what I was doing. I had millions of things on my mind other than what was at hand, and to make matters worse, I was in the middle of the most critical job I had to do to get ready - Shaving!

While I was finishing up the job with a new razor in hand I noticed a few places where I had missed a spot or two and was quickly going back over those areas of my face that still were not as smooth and stubble free as needed. Without warning or any real notice I veered too close to my nose and before I knew it I had shaved off the top skin of one side of my nose. I was shocked, stunned, and embarrassed.

Right in the middle of my hurried plans to get ready for church I had a mini-catastrophe on my hands. Needless to say my plans had to be changed to reflect my present crisis mode.

Have you ever had something like this happen to you?  Out of nowhere something happens at the worst possible time?  You were not wanting it - or even deserving of the situation but - it happens anyway and you have to deal with it. Here are some observations that may help you get through through those "razors edge situations".

1. Troubles often come when we get in a hurry. Slow down and think. Tone down your activities a bit to include time for reflection  and a more controlled schedule. Take the time to plan and organize your day so you are not running behind or on empty.

2. Pay attention to everything you do. It is usually the small things that come at us that trip us up and cause so much pain and disorder. Every little detail in your life is important. If you are on a health program to get in shape or take a few pounds off you need to track every little exercise you do and every calorie you put in your body. You have to pay attention.

3. Focus on what is at hand. When you are talking with someone, listening to something, driving somewhere, writing or engaged in an activity - make sure you focus on that. There will be plenty of time to reflect, plan, or vision cast later in your day. Stay focused and give it your best. It will pay off in more productivity and success.

4. Just because your intentions are good or plans are honorable you're not guaranteed success or allowed any slack in being professional and alert. I was getting ready for church, wanting to go do good. Just simply getting ready for something I had done thousands of times. But still I had no extra grace or magic promise from the Bible that protected me from a razors edge. I personally do not want God to have to perform miracles every day to get me through my day. I want signs and wonders to follow me as I - do His work - His way - and operate in His power. While we all are guaranteed His plan and provision, we are not promised a trouble free life if we loose focus, don't pay attention, or get in a hurry.

Running to do good, preparing to minister in Jesus name, rising to the occasion, being right where Jesus wants you to be are all great desires and goals - but missing it by a razors edge should be a warning for us all that we are not immune from the troubles and dangers of life just because we are His child and servant.

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray that God will help you slow down, pay attention to matters as hand, and keep your focus!

Action/Reaction

 Action/Reaction by Laurie McTier

"A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger." Proverbs 15:1

Is your life a thermostat or a thermometer? Do others see the love of Christ glowing in your life, or do they see you the same as everyone else who acts and reacts to situations in anger. Our lives should be different; they should draw others to Christ, not away from Him.

Here are two illustrations. Take a moment to do an honest inventory to see which one best describes your life.

Todd Thermometer - Todd is a "hot-head". As the circumstances around him begin to rise and moods elevate, he immediately reacts in anger. Todd is one of the first to "blow his top" and respond in anger. Todd is known to be very verbal and aggressive in his behavior. His behavior affects all those around him.

Timothy Thermostat - Timothy seeks to honor God in all of his actions and reactions. He strives to begin each day in prayer and Bible study. When stressors begin to increase around him, Timothy will find the time to go directly to God (not his family, friends, and coworkers) and present his problems and concerns. Timothy's reactions resemble that of a thermostat. No matter the level of stress around him, his actions and reactions are the same. His behavior affects all those around him.

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray that your life will be more consistent with that of a thermostat. Pray that your actions and reactions will glorify God.

On The Go Prayer Focus: The physical, spiritual, emotional, and financial needs of people hurting all over the United States and Worldwide. As God gives us opportunity in times of crisis we need to rapidly move to help.

Don't Let Fear Keep You From Wandering

Don't Let Fear Keep You From Wandering by Keith Cook Jr.

Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, "We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we shall surely overcome it." But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us." Numbers 13:30, 31

The Israelites were now wandering in the wilderness following the cloud by day and the fire by night. Wherever it went they followed.  When the Lord spoke to Moses saying, "Send out for yourself men so that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I am going to give to the sons of Israel", they were probably eager to let them go. They wanted desperately to enter into the Promise Land.

God knew that when He sent the spies they would have no trouble finding the Promise Land. He allowed for these chosen men to spy on the inhabitants and to inspect the land so that they may come and give a report to the people. Upon their return they reported that the land truly was one of "milk and honey" but that the inhabitants of the land were giants far greater that the Israelites. In fact they said that they appeared as only grasshoppers in the sight of the people. Because of this report the Israelites began to worry and fear that they would never be able to enter in.

Fear kept them from entering into the promise that God had given them. They knew that God was on their side and yet they doubted. Why did they doubt the God that had carried them from Egypt in His hand supplying for their every need? Fear. They allowed for their own fears of not being able to defeat the Nephilim, the giants of the land, to hinder God's perfect plan for them.

Many times as Christians we are put in this same situation. We know what we should do because God has put it on your heart, but we let fear take over. We are assured victory but yet we still don't obey. Do you trust God? If you are not able to step out on faith regardless of your personal anxiety, take some time to read the book of Numbers. Read of how it took the Israelites forty years to finally believe God. It will encourage you to take that step of faith. Be like Caleb in verse 30 where he was eager to enter the Promise Land. He was confident of victory. He trusted God so much that there was never a doubt in his mind. Follow his example and be overjoyed and eager to follow after God's will for your life. Don't let fear keep you wandering for forty years.

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray that God will show you areas of your life that you may be facing fears. Confess them, and pray for Boldness and Faith to step out and follow His plan.

On The Go Prayer Focus: On The Go's Neighborhood Outreach Program. In reality, very little is being done to reach people in many communities across the USA. On The Go is striving to train local Christians and help them develop programs that can systematically and permanently reach real needs in their neighborhoods.

And The Survey Says

And The Survey Says by Keith Cook

"With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes." Psalms 119:10-12

What in the world is going on. Today's church is drifting farther and farther away from being the church and is quickly becoming just an activity center. Take for example the trend for canceling midweek services, Sunday night services, and canceling services when holidays fall on Sundays.

Also note a recent survey that points to the fact that the average mainline church in America does not hold regular training classes on evangelism and outreach, effective praying, marriage enrichment, parenting and child development, financial management, or spiritual growth and renewal. This is shocking.

It is time for all Christians and Christian leaders to rally behind effective training and ministry opportunities for all members. We do not need to go back to the mentality that it is the "paid clergy's" job to do all the work and know all the facts. In these days of cultural upheaval it is imperative that believers know what they believe, why they believe, and be able to defend and promote their beliefs.

(Research from Ellison Research, Phoenix, Arizona, Facts & Trends Magazine, 2005)

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray that Christians around the world will stand for what they believe.

On The Go Prayer Focus: On The Go's GoKids Clubs. The focus of GoKids Clubs is to present a clear Gospel message to young children in our festivals, missions, and local neighborhoods. Pray for On The Go as we minister to boys and girls and share with them the love of Jesus Christ.

Start Your Day

Start Your Day by Keith Cook

"But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper." Psalms 1:2, 3

My good friend and mentor, Leighton Ford, sent me an email recently that sent me to my knees in prayer. I had been rather busy and had neglected to spend real quality time with my Lord. Oh, I had said my usual "Lord Bless Me", "Lord Protect Me", "Lord Use Me" prayers but had not had much time for reflection and listening.

It is wise to be reminded by other's examples and emails that God is still waiting and longing to really speak with us. Leighton's email included the following prayer that I would like to share with you today.

A Prayer of St. Fursey

The arms of God be around my shoulders,

the touch of the Holy Spirit upon my head,

the sign of Christ's cross upon my forehead,

the sound of the Holy Spirit in my ears,

the fragrance of the Holy Spirit in my nostrils,

the vision of heaven's company in my eyes,

the conversation of heaven's company on my lips,

the work of God's church in my hands,

the service of God and the neighbor in my feet,

a home for God in my heart,

and to God, the father of all, my entire being.

Amen.

As you can see this prayer, while simple, is very appropriate for our everyday lives.

May you look to Christ to be all you need.

May you trust in Him to work on your behalf.

May you start and end your day with hope and joy because you have been with Him!

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray that God will enable you to relax and listen for His still small voice.

Leadership Perils and Insights

Leadership Perils and Insights by Keith Cook

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.:" Proverbs 3:5, 6

There are many joys and rewards in being a Christian leader. Working with believers to do the work of the Lord is a joy in and of itself. Seeing people come alive as they do the will of God is so exciting. Seeing the fruit of one's labor and seeing co-workers and peers working as a team brings satisfaction and inner peace. But there are some perils that face leaders of every generation.

Some of the perils and pitfalls facing leaders include:

1. Letting need get you to focus on it over God's call

2. Letting friendship get in the way of a direct word from God

3. Taking a short cut from God's plan

4. Being set up by the devil - surviving being blindsided by co-workers, friends, Christians

5. Thinking everyone is on the same page  - how pride in work can remove light

Some of the JOYS of being a leader include:

1. Seeing someone mature and rise above others

2. Seeing someone devour the Word

3. Seeing the fruit of one's labor

4. Being able to share a Vision from God

5. Putting feet to faith and dreaming big dreams with a Vision from God

HOW TO MISS GOD

1. Listen to fame above the voice of God

2. Listen to friends above the voice of God

3. Listen to family above the voice of God

4. Listen to spouse above the voice of God

HOW TO SETTLE FOR LESS THAN GOD'S BEST

1. Go do something anyone can do

2. Go do something someone else should do

3. Go do something small when there is something grand to do

4. Being tied down with the stuff of missions, ministry or church work when God has faith works for you to do

A MAN (or Woman) OF GOD

1. Is a man of the book - the Bible

2. Is a man of prayer - takes devotional life serious

3. Is a man of action - does not just talk about it but actually does what is on his heart

4. Is a man after God's own heart - wants to glorify God in his body and through his life

Observations from years of ministry with both young and old:

1. You have not heard from God if you are not spending time in Bible Study and Prayer.

2. You have not heard from God if you are avoiding mentors in your life.

3. You have not heard from God if you are not still listening for and to His voice every moment.

Many have a thought, desire, fear, opportunity, and begin to talk and plan before they pray. They begin to plan before they get spiritual confirmation.  They run ahead of God. They get a word from God and never look back or get new light on what God has said or may be saying now.

Choose this day not to be a short sighted leader. Listen moment by moment to the voice of God. Swallow your pride, go back on the attack, get back in the battle for souls. Do the work of the evangelist in this generation.

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray that God will give you the heart and vision of a leader. Allow Him to mold you into a leader that will bring glory and honor to His name.

The Epidemic

 The Epidemic by Joan Cook

"Now flee youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace..." 2 Timothy 2:22

The topic today may make you a little uncomfortable. It is a subject that we do not like to talk about, but it is affecting the lives of millions of America's young people. I am referring to sexually transmitted diseases. Don't freak out! It's okay to read about this and even talk about it!

Frankly, that's part of the problem - we don't talk about it enough! This devotion will be different from most and I pray it will give you information that can help you in making a difference in the life of just one person, maybe even in your own family.

In the book "Epidemic" by Dr. Meg Meeker there are some profound statistics. She writes, "This year alone (2002), 15.3 million Americans will contract a new sexually transmitted disease. Two to four million of those infected will be teenagers. Nearly one out of every four sexually active teens are living with a sexually transmitted disease at this moment." Every day eight thousand teens become infected with a STD. These statistics astounded me! Every year about one million teenage girls get pregnant. Half of all students in the ninth grade have had sexual intercourse. Teens today think that they are safe and not having "real" sex if they only engage in oral sex. A big percent of those engaging in oral sex are under the age of fourteen.

Dr. Meeker tells a shocking true story. She writes, "She had heard some kids were going to have a rainbow party, but she had no idea what that meant. Still, she thought it might be fun, and arranged to attend with a friend. After she arrived, several girls (all in the eighth grade) were given different shades of lipstick and told to perform oral sex on different boys to give them rainbows. When a girl gave her some lipstick, she refused at first but, with repeated pressure, finally gave in. 'It was one of the grossest things I have ever done,' she said crying. 'I just wanted to hide and die. I felt like vomiting.'" (Meeker, Meg (2002). Epidemic, How Teen Sex is Killing Our Kids. Regenery Publishing.)

I realize this is not a warm and fuzzy devotion and please forgive me for being so candid with you, but I strongly believe we have a responsibility to today's youth, especially our own!

It has been proven that if we do the following, we will have a positive affect on our teenagers.

1) Take time for our teens

2) Get involved in their lives

3) Get to know their friends

4) Teach them about the Lord

5) Set a godly example

No, this does not ensure us that they will never yield to peer pressure, but when a godly foundation has been laid, it makes it extremely more difficult for our young people to make wrong choices and yield to temptation.

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray for parents as they seek to set godly foundations for their young people. Pray for teens to make wise decisions.

Well Rounded and Grounded

Well Rounded and Grounded by Keith Cook

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." Matthew 7:24

Even though we hate to admit it, we all are creatures of habit and have certain needs that can only be met within our culture, people group, or peers. These Psychological Needs are very strong and demanding upon us, mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

What are these needs?

1. Each of us has Safety needs. What we really want is to feel secure and safe in our homes, our neighborhoods, and our workplace. When we loose that sense of safety, like we did emotionally after 9/11/01, we feel insecure and vulnerable.

2. Everyone has Social needs. People need to meet in groups and have fun, expand their minds, and mingle. When someone becomes a loner or recluse they are loosing their sense of community and wholeness.

3. People all over the world also have Esteem needs. People want to be needed and wanted. They want to be noticed. There are times when they want to fit in, and times when they want to be rebels. They want to accomplish great things and be noticed by their peers. Everyone wants to be liked and appreciated.

4. Finally, people in every generation and culture have tremendous Growth needs. They need to expand their minds. They have a need to try new things, to learn and to grow. Exploration, research, expansion, and creativity are all traits and attributes God seeded into all human beings.

A well rounded individual can move through life without many major crashes and setbacks in most of these areas. Being well rounded, while it is important, is not as important as being well grounded. We need to be well grounded in our faith in Christ, as well as being well grounded in the Word of God.

Knowing what God has to say about safety, society, esteem, and growth is more important than what a teacher or media expert could say. Having confidence in God's direction and care can help any person make it through the times when one of these areas of our lives is lacking or not being fulfilled.

Try being well rounded in life and well grounded in Christ. You can not have one without the other. Think about it!

On The Go Prayer Focus: Joan Cook's "Women On The Go" Ministries. Joan's "Women On The Go" programs are implemented at women's conferences, local churches, retreats, and separate stand-alone events. God has given her a burden to minister to and encourage women in their walk with the Lord. Pray for Joan as she ministers and shares from her heart and as she presents motivational, evangelistic programs, materials, and leadership to and for women that will challenge and motivate them to a deeper walk with the Lord.

I Want

 I Want by Joan Cook

"Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go." Proverbs 4:13

When my son, Keith Jr., was a toddler he was a pretty good child. He did not go through the terrible two's like some kids that I know. He waited until he was three and had built up a little extra trouble inside, then he threw it on us.

I remember one day in particular, the family had gone to the mall for a quick stop on the way to an event. We had let Keith Jr. know that we would not have time to go into the toy store on this particular visit. Upon entering the mall, his dad had taken hold of one hand and I the other. We were on a mission to find our desired purchase and head out the door as soon as possible!

We were about half way down the mall when Keith Jr. spotted the toy store and began to plead to go in. We once again said " No, not tonight". For the first time in his little life, he sat on the ground and began to kick his legs and pitch an unholy fit. In his three year old mind, he thought this tactic would assure him a visit to the toy store.

Instead of giving in to quiet him down, his dad and I proceeded to drop his hands and walk away; leaving him screaming in the middle of the mall. We'd only taken a couple of steps when he jumped up and began running after us crying! He realized that he was not going to get his way so he had better jump up and do it his parents way! (By the way, he never did that again!)

Are you like a three year old at times in your relationship with the Lord? You may read His word, clearly understand His instructions, and know from the start what is required of you, yet you try to manipulate God into letting you have your own way. I've done it many times, I'm ashamed to say. "Lord, you know we need a new car. This one is falling apart. I know what your word says about going into debt, but you see how important this is, right? Are you telling me, Lord, that you want me to drive an old, beaten up car when I can easily go out and purchase a new one?"

As my brother once told me when we were young, "Start acting your age, not your shoe size." I'm afraid that at times, God wants to drop our hands and leave us pitching a fit, and sometimes that's exactly what He does. Sometimes it takes a while for us to realize that His way is the best way!

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray for God's perfect will and plan in your life. Pray that He will unite your heart with His will.

On The Go Prayer Focus: On The Go's GoCare ministry. This is our acts of kindness and benevolence ministry department. The focus of our GoCare ministry is to reach out to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of hurting individuals and to build bridges between churches and their communities.

Heavenly Vision

 Heavenly Vision by Laurie McTier

"And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: God hath shewed Pharaoh what he is about to do." Genesis 41:25

Joseph was a man of honor and integrity. Joseph feared God and walked with him. God protected Joseph, and even in prison, He took care of him, and gave him high regard among his captors.

Pharaoh was greatly disturbed by two dreams that he had in one evening. He begged for help, still there was no one who could interpret his dreams. At this time, the butler remembered a promise he had made to Joseph when he was in prison. The butler told Pharaoh about Joseph and then Pharaoh called for him to come and give him his interpretation of his dreams.

God blessed Joseph by giving him the interpretations of Pharaoh's dreams. Through the dreams, God informed Pharaoh of seven years of prosperity and seven years of famine. This allowed Egypt to prepare for upcoming conflict by building

storehouses and gathering supplies.

God gave Joseph and Pharaoh godly insight to the needs of their fellow countrymen. Has God given you a dream or a vision of the needs of those around you? God can use you to reach someone in your immediate surroundings that only you can effectively minister to. Are you willing and available to be used by God to make an eternal investment?

Don't let the vision die. Had Joseph not been willing to risk it all by giving to Pharaoh God's interpretation, many lives would have been lost.

How can we win this world to Jesus. It can only happen one soul at a time. Each one can reach one.

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray that God show you what He is doing in your midst. Seek after His heart, and pray that you will remain available to Him to carry out His vision for your life.

On The Go Prayer Focus: On The Go Ministry Supporters. It takes teamwork to make the dream work! Our ministry supporters have made commitments to play a vital part of our team through praying, sharing, caring, going, and growing.

The Proposal

 The Proposal by Keith Cook

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13

I love having younger leaders working with me because each day is exciting and full of surprises. One of my full time staff had been dating a fine Christian girl for over two years and they had begun to look rather dreamily at each other at every event we saw them at. Joan and I, along with every married couple who met the two, quickly came to the conclusion that these two were made for each other.

One day while driving in the car with the young man he rather casually said he was looking at engagement rings and wanted my opinion on what his girlfriend would like. I quickly said Joan was a better judge than I, so we scheduled a night for Joan to go to the jewelry store looking with him.  It was such fun to look at him picking out rings and trying to get that one special ring for his most special person.  Once he made his decision he had to shell out hard cold cash to secure the ring. He had saved for nearly a year to make this lifetime purchase.

Prior to asking her the big question he wracked his brain for the best time and the best place to propose.  Once he decided, he sprang into action. He secretly met with her mother and secured her blessing. He then set about to make sure that nothing spoiled that special night. He had picked a night that saw them with our entire team and group of friends. While we were all together, there were several hours where we all would be apart. It was during one of these times that he struck. After he proposed and she said yes, they came around our group of friends and it was so obvious what had just happened. She literally glowed and he was beaming. Also she was wearing the most beautiful ring on her ring finger. They were engaged. Pledged to each other. Young love. Joyous love. Exciting and new.

Your relationship with Christ can be the same way. He loves you. You have been made to only have life in Him. He has chosen you to be His forever. He gave His life to secure your place at the wedding feast He has prepared for you. He has given you his pledge by way of the Holy Spirit. He will not let anything keep you from the marriage supper and life He has for you. You are sealed in Christ.  He has planned a wonderful home for you. He wants to lavish on you great gifts and treasures.

All you have to do is say YES. Once you are in Christ or if you are in Christ it will be so obvious. You glow. You shine. You reflect the love you have received in Him.

Instead of getting down on His knees He got up on the cross and is asking you to be His forever. Say Yes, Yes, Yes!

Daily Prayer Focus: If you have not accepted God's proposal of a forever relationship with you, why not consider doing so today.  And, if you have said yes to Jesus, do all you can today to help others come to know Christ as their Lord and Savior.

On The Go Prayer Focus: The GoTeam Short Term Missions Projects and GoTeam Members. GoTeams are made up of young people and adults who voluntarily go on an On The Go mission project around the world and are making a strategic impact for Christ.
