Rain Forest

Rain Forest by Joan Cook

"Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig-tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done.'" Matthew 21:21

A few years ago on a mission project to Costa Rica, our team had the opportunity to go into the rain forest. We boarded a six person aerial tram that was to take us two miles into the rain forest and then turn and come two miles back out. How excited we all were to see the beautiful plants, flowers, wildlife, and beauty of the rain forest. We even saw Toucans! Our tram climbed to the top of the rain forest so we could have an overview of the beauty!

We had traveled about a mile and a half when it began to storm! It was thundering and lightning so badly we were afraid it would strike the tram. About that time, Kaboom! Our tram came to a stop one hundred feet above the ground! We waited for the rain to subside for our tram to begin again, but when the rain ended, our tram remained still! For three hours we were stuck waiting for the problem to be fixed.

Our tour guide informed us that help was on the way, but we would have to rappel out of the cable car one hundred feet to the ground! My son, who was 21 at the time, threw his hands in the air, and said with excitement, "I can't believe I'm in the rain forest in Costa Rica, stuck in a cable car, 100 feet up in the air and I get to rappel"! At the same time, the response of a 40 year old woman (myself), was, "I can't believe I'm in the rain forest in Costa Rica, stuck in a cable car, 100 feet up in the air and I have to rappel!" Needless to say, we all made it to the ground and out of the rain forest safely!

Isn't that just like our response to God sometimes? "God, you've brought me this far and I know you're taking care of me, but you want me to do what? You want me to just jump out of my comfort zone and let you do the rest? God, do you know how hard, how scary, how uncomfortable that is for me?" God would rather us have the attitude my son had of excitement and anticipation of what He wants to do in and through us!

The Lord knows what our potential is in Him and He also knows our limitations! God is telling us to break out of our comfort zone and step out in faith knowing He will be there to catch us! Take that first leap of faith; He'll do the rest!
