My Mother

My Mother by Joan Cook

"I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD." 1 Samuel 1:27, 28

I am the youngest of five children. I have a sister, Peggy; a brother, Larry; a brother, David; and a sister, Janis. My mom had her hands full! As I was growing up, my mother worked outside the home. She worked as a church secretary and then a head teller in a bank as she raised her five children. Then, she became a trooper for the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Yes, she carried a gun!

My mother was a strong woman. She's always had to be! You see, my father was an alcoholic and had another life apart from his family's on many occasions. But, my Mom was always there! She worked to keep food on the table, clothes on our backs, and a roof over our head. She worked hard to make sure her children had everything they needed.

I can't remember a year when she did not take us on a vacation. I grew up in South Mississippi, but every year she would take us to the beach in Destin, the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, or Disney World in Orlando. She always managed to have fun with her children.

More than anything else, my mother instilled in me a love for Jesus Christ. She trusted in Him and taught us to do the same. She taught me that I had to put feet to my faith. She taught me that I could not stand by and ask God for something unless I was willing to do my part. She also taught me that the only way to true joy was to be in the center of God's will.

I have learned so much from my mother and I hope I have handed down some of her wisdom to my son. This Mother's Day, I want to say thank you to my mom! Thank you for always being there for me! Thank you for loving me and teaching me to love the Lord!

Personal Prayer Focus: Praise God for godly mothers who have made eternal investments in their children's lives.

On The Go Prayer Focus: On The Go's GoKids Clubs. The focus of GoKids Clubs is to present a clear Gospel message to young children in our festivals, missions, and local neighborhoods. Pray for On The Go as we minister to boys and girls and share with them the love of Jesus Christ.

Set The Pace

Set The Pace by Laurie McTier

"Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith," Hebrews 12:1,2

A short time ago, God gave me the opportunity to spend some quality time with a very dear friend. My friend is physically fit, but this year God is teaching her discipline as she is developing a jogging program so that she can stay in shape.

One afternoon, my friend asked me to go walking with her. In my heart, I know that I need to increase my exercise routine, so I quickly agreed. Although I tried to keep the pace, it seemed that I just slowed her regimen down. As we walked, we made many new acquaintances, one of which was 60 years old and walks at least an hour and a half every evening. Mr. H. guards his exercise time, and does not allow anything to interfere as this is one of the most important parts of his day, second only to his personal time with the Lord and family.

Mr. H. and my friend were able to keep pace with one another, and I asked them to go ahead of me so that they could get the full extent of their walk. I noticed that I began to get a little discouraged because I was not as in shape as they were and could not walk as fast as they did. At times, I wanted to quit.

Through this illustration, I am reminded that the enemy wants to prohibit us from doing anything that is beneficial for the Kingdom or would bring glory to God. One thing that God taught me as I walked that afternoon was that He wanted me to allow Him to "set the pace". He reminded me that I am not to compete or compare myself to others, but just relax and let Him set the controls in my life. He also showed me that it is His desire that I press on and not quit. This can apply to every area of our lives, not just in exercising. We can all make overall applications in our lives as God wants to discipline us in many areas of our life. God wants us to remain faithful to His call and to keep the pace in all that He has laid out on our course of life.

Daily Prayer: God, give me the strength and stamina that I need today to fulfill the tasks You have for me to do. Help me to keep the pace.

On The Go Prayer Focus: Those who need to make decisions for Christ as On The Go and the Keith Cook Team shares the Gospel around the world. Pray that they will hear a clear message about Christ, that the Holy Spirit will move them to a point of decision and that they will be bold enough to publicly respond for Christ.

Please Don't Feed The Flesh

Please Don't Feed The Flesh by Joan Cook

"For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him?  Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God." 1 Corinthians 2:11-16

To grow and develop physically, we must be well nourished. The same is true for our spiritual man.  When we're hungry, we eat, there will never be a time when you'll fill your body up so much that you won't ever be hungry again. You must eat daily. Yesterday's meal doesn't fill you up today. On the other hand, what you ate yesterday does affect your body today!

Our spiritual man is hungry! Daily we must eat! Yesterday's spiritual food doesn't fill you up for today. It certainly makes your spirit man stronger or weaker depending on what you've ingested.

When you became a Christian, you received the Holy Spirit of God living in you!
Now, you have a choice: Feed the Flesh or Feed the Spirit! There is a battle in each of us - between flesh and spirit - who are we going to feed?

When we feed the flesh, we fill up on things of the world that make us feel good. Things we want!  Filling our appetites on worldly desires without checking with our God to see if what we desire is in line with His desire for us.

When we feed the spirit, we nourish that relationship with the Lord so that we are able to have the "mind of Christ" in every situation

Materialism takes a very strong hold when we feed the flesh. It brings about discontentment, causing things to look better "over there" and cloud our thinking and vision. It taints what we have so that it looks less desirable.  It is magnetizing. When the spirit of materialism takes hold it draws you away from God and closer to the specific desire.

Consider the following parallels:

Fleshly Desire - Discontentment - Discouragement -Depression - Death

Spiritual Desire - Contentment - Encouragement - Joy - Life

"Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?"  1 Corinthians 3:16-17

Daily Prayer Focus: Pray today that you will choose spiritual desires over the flesh, contentment over discontentment, encouragement over discouragement, joy over depression, and life over death.

On The Go Prayer Focus: The Development Ministries of On The Go. This ministry team helps On The Go stay on the go! Called to Pray - National Day of Prayer

Called to Pray - National Day of Prayer by the Staff of On The Go and the Presidential Prayer Team

The Staff at On The Go Ministries, the Presidential Prayer Team, and the National Day of Prayer Task Force would like to invite you to join us in celebrating the "National Day of Prayer"!

"if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." II Chronicles 7:14

Today is the day set aside as the National Day of Prayer across America. Prayer is a powerful weapon. Prayer can break through strongholds, which have stood firm for years. God wants His Children to become mighty, active prayer warriors!

The National Day of Prayer has a rich history, dating from the first declaration of a day of prayer and fasting that was implemented by George Washington to President Lincoln's call for prayer and fasting during the Civil War to the modern-day declaration signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1952.

Prayer is an opportunity to humbly come before God and confess all sins and to praise God for His mighty works, His gift of freedom, His mercy, and His boundless love. Through prayer, we recognize the limits of earthly power and acknowledge the sovereignty of God. Prayer leads to humility and a grateful heart, and it turns our minds to the needs of others.

As our nation looks to the future, the need for prayer remains high. This year the National Day of Prayer Task Force has chosen Seven Centers of Influence to help us stay focused and intentional as we pray for America.

Select Prayer Focus:

Use this list to guide and direct your prayer time. As you pray for the individuals listed, pray that they will be given godly wisdom and guidance, great strength and divine protection in the key positions they hold. Remember, especially, our troops who safeguard freedom overseas.

1.  Pray for Government. Pray for our local, state, and national leaders asking God to grant them wisdom, discernment, and hearts that are open to His Leading. Pray for your elected officials, their spouses, and their children.

2.  Pray for the Churches and Church Leaders throughout our nation and in your community. Ask God to preserve and protect them as He inspires and empowers them to equip His "Saints" for the work of ministry, for the building up of the Church, and the spreading of the Gospel.

3.  Pray for our Military and its leaders. Pray for God to grant courage, protection, and strength for our service men and women, and their families as they serve our country.

4.  Pray for Families in our nation, your state, and your community. God's model for the family is being challenged, and we are seeing families fall apart before our very eyes. Pray with passion for the Lord to protect and to strengthen marriages, encourage parents toward His priorities, heal relationships, and secure His values in their homes.

5.  Pray for Education. Pray for God's presence in our schools, colleges, and universities. Ask Him to select teachers and administrators who honor His statutes and protect our children, and inspire them to discover their God-given calling.

6.  Pray for Media.  Pray for Christian Influence in the media industry, from movies, television, and radio stations, to newspaper and magazine publishers.  Ask the Lord to provide Godly men and women to work in, and influence the media throughout our nation, your state, and your city.

7.  Pray for Business. Pray for Divine Intervention in our national, state, and local economies.  Ask God to raise up godly business leaders and create industry to provide honest employment and generous provision for our individuals and families in each community.

Suggested  Prayer for The National Day of Prayer

Dear heavenly Father, we come to You today as a humble people desperate for Your supernatural intervention on behalf of our beloved nation.  First, we thank You for all the blessings You have bestowed on our land, blessings that have allowed us to bring so much good and benefit to not only our own citizens but also to the rest of the world. The very ideals upon which this country was founded were based on biblical truths, no matter how some try to rewrite history to deny that very fact today.

This is why our hearts are so broken over how You continue to be marginalized and dismissed by both our people and our institutions. We are also saddened by the fact that Your people have contributed greatly to the spiritual apathy that now engulfs us. Our satisfaction in remaining religious without being fully committed to living out the truths of Your Word has caused us to become co-conspirators with the forces of evil that are destroying us as a society.

It is for this reason that we personally and collectively repent of our carnality and recommit ourselves to becoming visible and verbal disciples of Jesus Christ. Enable us, by Your Spirit, to no longer be secret agent Christians but rather to publicly declare and live out Your truth in a spirit of love so that You feel welcome in our country once again.

Thank You for Your promise to hear our prayers when we call to You with hearts of repentance and obedience, which is how we are appealing to You today, Father. On behalf of Your church, we affirm afresh the priority You are to us that You would fill every dimension of our lives as we seek to bring You glory through the advancement of Your kingdom in our personal lives, our family lives, and in the lives of our churches and our government leaders. We confidently invite heaven's intervention into all the affairs of our nation and we praise You in advance for Your answer.

In Jesus' name we pray.  Amen.

- 2016 National Prayer by Dr. Tony Evans  Honorary Chairperson of National Day of Prayer Task Force 2016

Suggested Prayer Scriptures:

Use these scripture verses to set the tone for your observance of The National Day of Prayer.

"I urge then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving, be made for everyone - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives, in all godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases God our Savior."  I Timothy 2:1-3a

"Since prayer is at the bottom of all this, what I want mostly is for men to pray--not shaking angry fists at enemies but raising holy hands to God."  1 Timothy 2:8

"He appointed military officers over the people and assembled them before him in the square at the city gate and encouraged them with these words: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles."" 2 Chronicles 32:6-8

"Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." James 5:16

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express." Romans 8:26

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints." Ephesians 6:18

"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains." Colossians 4:2,3

"The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble.  He cares for those who trust in Him" Nahum 1:7

"Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you. Accept instruction from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart." Job 22:21, 22

"Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,"  Ephesians 3:20

Called to Pray

Called to Pray by the Staff of On The Go and the Presidential Prayer Team

The Staff at On The Go Ministries and the Presidential Prayer Team would like to invite you to join us in celebrating the "National Day of Prayer"!

"So that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." Romans 15:6

"For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name. "  Amos 4:13

"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."  2 Chronicles 7:14

Tomorrow is the day set aside as the National Day of Prayer across America. Prayer is a powerful weapon. Prayer can break through strongholds, which have stood firm for years. God wants His Children to become mighty, active prayer warriors!  The 65th annual National Day of Prayer, May 4, 2016 will have profound significance for our country.  It is an unprecedented opportunity to see the Lord's healing and renewing power made manifest as we call on citizens to humbly come before His throne.

Our theme for 2016 is Wake Up America, emphasizing the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to return to the God of our Fathers in reverence for His Holy Name. To further highlight our theme, we've chosen Isaiah 58:1a as our Scripture for this year:  "Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet."

Prayer is an opportunity to praise God for His mighty works, His gift of freedom, His mercy, and His boundless love. Through prayer, we recognize the limits of earthly power and acknowledge the sovereignty of God. Prayer leads to humility and a grateful heart, and it turns our minds to the needs of others.

At this crucial time for our nation, we can do nothing more important than pray.  Thank you in advance for making this spiritual discipline a personal priority and for standing with us as we encourage others to incorporate prayer in their lives.  The Lord has graciously anointed our efforts, empowering them to touch and change many hearts and lives.

If you are not already a member of The Presidential Prayer Team, we encourage you to show your support by joining this important prayer effort today. The goal of The Presidential Prayer Team is to mobilize 1% of the U.S. population, or 2.8 million people, to commit to pray daily for the President, his cabinet and our nation. This year the Presidential Prayer Team would like to invite you to join millions of praying Americans praying online for our nation.

To learn how you can join this history-making effort, visit The Presidential Prayer Team at www.presidentialprayerteam.org.  It is an unprecedented opportunity to see the Lord's healing and renewing power made manifest as we call on citizens to humbly come before His throne.

Select Prayer Focus:

Use this list to guide and direct your prayer time. As you pray for the individuals listed, pray that they will be given godly wisdom and guidance, great strength and divine protection in the key positions they hold. Remember, especially, our troops who safeguard freedom overseas.

National Leaders: President: Barack Obama. First Lady: Michelle Obama. Vice President: Joseph Biden. Cabinet Members, Cabinet Rank Members, Members  of the Congress in the House of Representatives and the Senate, and The U.S. Supreme Court, Federal and Appellate Courts.

Pray for our State Leaders: U.S. Senators, U.S. Representatives, Governors, Lt. Governors, State Senators, State Representatives, State Supreme Court Justices.

Pray for Local Leaders: County Officials, Court Officials, City Officials, Judges, Mayors, Police Departments, Fire Departments, School Authorities (public & private), Pastors, and Community Leaders.

Pray for Our Troops: Pray for God to grant Courage, Protection, and Strength for our service men and women, and their families, as they serve our country. We are grateful for their courage and sacrifice and ask God to comfort their families while they are away from home.

Without Jesus, We Do Not Stand a Chance

Without Jesus, We Do Not Stand a Chance by Dr. Ken Mattox, DDS

"And the Spirit and the bride say, Come! And let him who hears say, Come! And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely." Revelation 22:17

As I look back over my life, I thank God for the many times He has protected me from myself. As a child, I was stubborn, rebellious, headstrong, and sassy. I remember my mother washing my mouth out with soap for saying nasty words when I was as young as five or six years old.

I received many whippings at home and at school, and I honestly needed every one of them. I sat alone in the auditorium in isolation many days. I was expelled in the fifth grade. In the seventh or eighth grade, a teacher told me that I would be in prison by the time I was twenty.

There are times in our lives that we need to realize that our way is not God's way, and we should turn back to Him. At the age of twelve, I made my profession of faith in Christ and was baptized.

Without Jesus, we do not stand a chance. The pressures on our young people today to drink alcohol, do drugs, commit fornication, lie, steal, and cheat are unbelievable! There's a void in our lives that only God can completely fill. Without Him, we fill it with everything else that is evil.

Christ's death and persecution paid the ultimate sacrifice for our sin debt. The Bible reads in Hebrews 4:16 that the gift of life and God's love are offered freely to all who will receive. Come boldly before God today and make your petitions known unto Him. The fact still remains, without Him, we do not stand a chance.

(This devotion was taken as an excerpt with permission from Dr. Mattox's book entitled "A Light in the Darkness". This book contains scripture references that have impacted Dr. Mattox's life and illustrations from some of experiences on the mission field. To receive your own personal copy of his book, please contact On The Go Ministries. Dr. Mattox went home to Heaven in October, 2006. He has been such a blessing to all of us fortunate to know and minister with him. Thank you Dr. Mattox!)

Personal Prayer Focus: Praise God for His unconditional love and unending love that has been freely offered so that we might come to know Him and have an intimate relationship with Him.

On The Go Prayer Focus: Keith Cook Crusades, Celebrations, and Festivals. God has given Keith the opportunity and privilege of sharing the message of Christ both stateside and internationally. During each opportunity, Keith presents a joyful and enthusiastic, yet powerful and clear presentation of the Gospel and a call to commitment to Christ.

Jesus Refines You

Jesus Refines You by Keith Cook

"And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver." Malachi 3:3

I found this story online several years ago and it has blessed my life and the lives of many others.

Some time ago, a few ladies met to study the scriptures. While reading the third chapter of Malachi, they came upon a remarkable expression in the third verse: "And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver." Malachi 3:3

One lady decided to visit a silversmith and that she would report to the others on what he said about the subject. She went accordingly and without telling him the reason for her visit, begged the silversmith to tell her about the process of refining silver.

After he had fully described it to her, she asked, "Sir, do you sit while the work of refining is going on?" "Oh, yes ma'am," replied the silversmith, "I must sit and watch the furnace constantly, for if the time necessary for refining is exceeded in the slightest degree, the silver will be injured."

The lady at once saw the beauty and comfort of the expression; He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver. God sees it necessary to put His children into the furnace, but His eye is steadily intent on the work of purifying. His wisdom and love are both engaged in the best manner for us. Our trials do not come at random. He will not let us be tested beyond what we can endure.

Before she left, the lady asked one final question, "How do you know when the process is complete?" "That's quite simple", replied the silversmith. "When I can see my own image in the silver, the refining process is finished."

Today as you go about your life and ministry I pray Jesus can see Himself in you.
